Cellar Assistant

Overview:

  • The Cellar Assistant reports to the owners of Quartz Rock Vineyard

  • No experience is required; but the position demands a willingness to learn, a strong work ethic, and character traits which include accountability and trustworthiness.  

  • This position will give hands-on experience, and as much responsibility as is earned, with the potential to grow with us.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in all day to day cellar operations, including harvest, bulk wine, barrels, bottling preparation, sanitation, and cellar organization and cleanliness.

    • Cleaning and sanitizing of all winery and crush equipment

    • Racking and pumping of juice and wine

    • Moving hoses and equipment

    • Operating crush equipment

    • Helping with end of day crush equipment cleaning

    • Following and observing all safe cellar and vineyard practices

    • Must be able to follow written and verbal directions exactly

    • Other duties assigned by supervisor

  • Maintain cleanliness of facility

  • Day to day upkeep of wines

    • Check and maintain proper pressure on wine vessels daily

    • Report anything out of the ordinary immediately

  • Take direction from the Assistant Winemaker and complete all requests when directed.  

    • Ask questions about any procedure that is new or requires clarification

    • Communicating when tasks are completed or when there is a delay

  • Participate in wine trials

  • Responsible for the various duties relating to the completion of work orders, safety checks, wine processes, reporting off standards, wash down and clean up, performing specified equipment maintenance and sanitizing work area.

  • Obtain lab samples

  • Assist in data management, as well as conduct bulk and bottled wine inventories.

  • Maintain inventory of new/empty bottles for bottling planning purposes

  • Maintain supplies inventory, including filters, sugar, yeast, and chemicals

Requirements

  • A serious interest in enology/winemaking, chemistry, and agriculture

  • Experience or education in the above areas preferred

  • Strong organizational, teambuilding, problem solving skills, attention to detail, with ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds; work on and around ladders, catwalks, uneven flooring, in hot, cold and wet environments; with typical winery chemical exposure and conditions.

  • Available to work a varied schedule during harvest season as needed.

  • Attention to detail is of extreme importance

Schedule and Compensation

  • Hours: Flexible schedule, part time Monday - Friday with some weekends during harvest season or for special events

  • Compensation commensurate with experience; starting at $15/hour.  This is a part-time hourly position with no benefits offered.

Wine Associate (Server)

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing an educational wine tasting experience to our guests

    • Greet all customers as they arrive at the winery and help them to their table if needed

    • Guide customers through their selected wine tasting, pouring each wine while describing each and answering guest questions 

      • Converse with guests about wine, history of Nightingale Farm and Quartz Rock Vineyard

      • Acquire and maintain thorough knowledge of Quartz Rock Vineyard and its wines.

    • Assist guests by making recommendations and suggestions based on their preferences 

    • Make all guests feel welcome, create a memorable experience  

  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of our wines and educating customers about them

  • Maintain outdoor tasting area and indoor storage rooms, including stocking wine and retail items and light cleaning 

  • Effectively answer phone line which may involve taking reservations or providing directions 

  • Quickly and accurately work cash register and Square point of sale system

  • Follow all current health and safety guidelines. 

    Requirements

    • Must have a friendly personality and professional demeanor. 

    • A thorough knowledge of our wines (we will teach you!) and the ability to explain and discuss them

    • Knowledge of our farm and of the winemaking process

    • Eagerness and willingness to learn

    • Excellent customer service skills 

    • Detail oriented, with a commitment to excellence and high standards.

    • Comfortable working outside and being physically active; which includes walking back and forth to tasting tables that are situated on our mountainous property, and assisting with carrying wine purchases to customer’s vehicles. 

    • Pre-existing knowledge of wine is preferred but not necessary

    • 18+ years of age required, 21+ preferred

      Hours and Compensation

    • Hours: Flexible schedule. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, up to 8 hours per day. 

    • Compensation: $11/hour plus tips.  This is a part time hourly position with no benefits offered.
